The fruit comprises many essential constituents which impart some essential roles to combat metabolic disorders, oxidative stress-induced manifestations, immune malfunctions, and cardiac dysfunctions. The increasing demand for the fruit owes to its beneficial uses of various by-products besides the nut. The fruit consists of cashew apple and cashew nut, which further consists of three parts: shell, coat, and nut. Processing occurs through three main steps: drying, shelling, and then removal of testa. The cashews are processed mostly through manual methods however, some advancement in the methods has been achieved. On global stage, India plays a major part on the cashew nut trade, being the second-largest country after Brazil for raw cashew nut production. Although cashew cultivation started in Brazil, it has reached to Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The main cashew-producing countries are Brazil, India, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Cashews are nutritionally very rich with a good fat and protein content. Although in the beginning it was considered a well-known agroforestry species used for the afforestation and soil binding purposes, its commercial exploitation started lately. It serves an immense importance with respect to global trade for its nuts. The crop is fast-growing, hardy, drought resistant, and it is familiar for its nut globally although all plant parts are valuable. Therefore through this order, it has been decided that till such time the standards for raw cashew nuts are notified, it may be considered as “food not specified “to facilitate trade.Cashew ( Anacardium occidentale L.) is a versatile plant cultivated in several tropical countries. Till the standards for raw cashew nuts are framed FSSAI cannot detain import consignment for inspection and such cashews only fall under plant quarantine. Raw cashew nuts are regarded as a raw material and therefore do not require FSSAI clearance presently. Raw cashew nuts are not directly edible but need to be processed in the cashew processing units prior to consumption. The Customs refers these consignments because raw cashew nuts have been listed under Chapter 8 of the Indian Tariff Code which has an ITC HS Code – 08013101. In the order, the FSSAI has stated that a large number of raw cashew nut consignments are referred to FSSAI by Customs for FSSAI clearance. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on dated 18 th January 2022 has issued an order regarding import of raw cashews.Īs per the earlier order dated 27 October 2017, the FSSAI has issued directions regarding exemption from FSSAI clearance for the import of raw cashew nuts.
